BACKGROUND
A 27-year-old woman presents to the emergency department with a sudden onset of a headache, confusion, and 2 episodes of convulsions. On examination, the patient is febrile and tachypneic. Neurologic examination reveals disorientation but normal power, tone, and reflexes. The woman's plantar reflex is normal, and she has no focal neurologic deficit. No neck stiffness or papilledema is recorded.
